The Busy World of Richard Scarry

In this unit children will be able to get in the fantasy of characters and the unlimited combinations that they are able to do. The idea is to have an introduction to the world of illustration. The focus will be in how characters have their own personality and how they born.

Objectives:

  • Teach children about the illustrator and writer Richard Scarry, his work and the 70’s
  • Discuss about his artwork and the connection he made between animals and everyday jobs or objects.
  • Learn about the unexpected character and main features to point out when drawing.
  • Practice their new knowledge by creating their own signature character.

Essential Questions:

1. Does a character separates’ from reality even do they represent somebody characteristics?
2. What kind of characters does a cartoon or a story can have?
3. What are the most important features in a character?
4. Does characters can influence your life?



Materials: 

Drawing path, drawing pencils color pencils or markers.



Discussion:
This discussion will start by watching a video about The Busy World of Richard Scarry cartoon.  This animation will show children about his work and characters to hopefully make the connection about the reality and fantasy. I would like to point his interest in make animals alive and the importance in creates characters in stories. Then, will be discussing about main characters, secondary characters and extras.

Activity:
1. Students will write a list that describes their self; features and personality.
2. They will sketch and create their own character that matches their personality base on the list. (They can choose just a few features to represent)
3. They will write a character profile guideline to be attached to their character.

Assessment:
Students need to explain to their peers the connection between their illustration and themself.
